£20,000 donation to support our work

Funding will help support the freshly cooked Lunch Box scheme for vulnerable families

We’re delighted to announce a very generous donation of £20,000 from the Kusuma Trust to our Covid-19 emergency appeal.

The Kusuma Trust kindly pledged to match-fund donations to us, through our crowdfunder and other sources, up to £20,000.

Following the school closures, we’ve been helping schools, volunteers and chefs set up Lunch Box schemes. The food parcels provide a week’s worth of freshly made meals, plus store cupboard essentials, to children who are eligible for Free School Meals.

Four kitchen hubs have been set up, these cook for other local schools. The newest hub opened last week, with more to follow.

Our charity has also been supporting and assisting other schools and organisations.

This is vital work – for some children, a Free School Meal is the only food they get each day. With schools closed, access to that food is at risk.

Over 1.3m children were eligible for Free School Meals before the Covid-19 pandemic. The number will only increase as the impact of the crisis hits home.

Naomi Duncan, Chief Executive at Chefs in Schools, said: “No child should go hungry because of this crisis. It’s so important to get good quality, nutritious meals to the children who need them most.

“This is not just about children who get Free School Meals, there are children who fall through the gaps and do not have access to public funds. We have to reach them too.

“We are so incredibly grateful to the Kusuma Trust for their generous donation to our Covid-19 work. These are unsettling times for everyone, ensuring people stay healthy is critical. The silver lining in this, is seeing everyone coming together – from philanthropists to volunteers – to make a difference.”

The Kusuma Trust is a philanthropic organisation that gives grants to causes, organisations and people making a positive difference to society. They choose partners based on shared values. They aim to create access to opportunities, to improve health and well-being, and to invest in communities and environment.

Our mission has always been to improve the health of children through better school food. We can’t thank the Kusuma Trust enough for choosing to help us do that.
