Meet Jamie – one of our volunteers.

He’s been working alongside teachers and the school kitchen team at Gayhurst Community School. Together, they’re been feeding the children of key workers and getting good food to families eligible for Free School Meals.

Jamie’s usually a TV Director, working on documentaries and factual programmes, so it’s been a steep learning curve for him.

Jamie says: “Over the last few weeks I’ve realised just how vital school kitchens, and the teams working in them, are. They’re dynamic, professional places to work and run as a very tight ship. It’s hard work – I’m shattered by the end of a shift.

“I’m helping at Gayhurst Community School. The rest of the school staff have been really friendly and encouraging. It’s nice to feel like I’m part of the wider team. There is the added benefit of having a little bit of social interaction at a time when there’s little of it to be had. That’s been so heartening and gratifying.

“We’re cooking for around 200 children. I prep the veg, bake bread and help to tidy up. I help prepare fruit, vegetables, pasta and rice for the food parcels.

“I’m glad to be able to do something positive. Covid-19 has been so disruptive for everyone. For families who are struggling to put food on the table, it’s must be even more stressful and scary. I hope the meals take some of those worries away.

“Looking forwards, if one good thing can come out of this crisis, I hope we reappraise the types of jobs we value in society. We need to show appreciation to chefs, teachers, cleaners and school support staff who work so hard to help keep kids safe, educated and healthy.”

Jamie, thanks for your support!
