We have some new chefs and a nursery to welcome to the Chefs in Schools family.

Little Jungle is the first nursery we’ve worked with. We believe that early years are a key time for children to form a healthy relationship with food, we’re very excited to see what impact the menu has.

Head Chef Elena will be running the kitchen, supported by Sous Chef Liam. The photo, taken just before Covid-19 closed schools and nurseries, marked their arrival. They’re now back in the kitchen and producing incredible food for children aged 10 months to 5 years old.

Elena grew up in Hong Kong and Singapore and loves Asian flavours, she says these will be featuring in the food. Elena brings a lot of experience to the kitchen – having completed a Masters in Human Nutrition from Columbia University in New York, then graduating from Leith’s School of Food and Wine.

Liam hails from Liverpool and has worked with a number of youth communities, as well as pop up restaurants.

Together they’ll be making a range of vegan, vegetarian and meat based lunches – already it’s going down well.

Elena says: “The children are asking us what’s for lunch and are excited about trying the food. As they’re so young, everything is new to them and they are very open-minded. There is a lovely relaxed nature at the nursery, it’s very creative and innovative, we want to make sure the food reflects that too.”

Last week they served up a Taco Tuesday feast – Vegan tacos with refried beans, roasted cauliflower, avocado crema, tomato salsa, pickled red cabbage and corn tortillas.

Macaroni and Cheese, topped with breadcrumbs was served for tea.

“Nice” Cream – was served for afters.

Good luck and welcome, Elena and Liam!
