Hackney backs school chefs
We’re offering free training and subsidised in-kitchen support, to help the unsung heroes of education – school kitchen teams. Thanks to funding from Hackney Borough Council, our team of experienced chef trainers is able to offer this help to every school in the borough.
With the cost of living crisis, the upheaval of Covid, and the recent rollout of primary UFSM in London, kitchen teams have never been more pressed. We want to help your school kitchen team provide healthy, nutritious meals within school budgets, which they’re proud to serve. Pupils feel the benefits with boosted attainment, health and behaviour.

For a limited number of schools, we’re offering intensive support, part-funded by Hackney Borough Council. Suitable for schools who are in-house or willing to go in-house.
A tried & tested model of intensive support. Our chef trainers will work onsite with you and your team, training them to make everything from scratch. Bread will be made each morning, Friday’s fish dish prepped in house and every sauce will be bursting with veg and flavour. We also train the teams in food education, ensuring every day in the dining hall is a positive learning experience for your pupils.
Expect:
- Tailored support for the entire school community for a smooth transition.
- A valued kitchen team with boosted morale, proud to be serving incredible fresh food, understanding their role in food education.
- Pupils looking forward to lunch, leaving ready to learn.
Other benefits include reduced food waste, school food standard compliance and meals that are climate friendly, plus you’ll join a supportive community of chefs, teachers and campaigners who all believe in the power of school food.

Who are we?
At Chefs in Schools, we transform kids’ health through food – plate by plate, class by class, school by school. We help schools recruit chefs and train school kitchen teams to make tasty, exciting meals packed with fresh, nutritious produce that kids enjoy. We help schools embed a good food culture, educating pupils about food in the dining room and classroom. We now reach tens of thousands of pupils across the UK, targeting areas where a significant percentage of pupils may rely on free school meals.
THE POWER OF FOOD
The research is clear, good school food improves attainment, health and behaviour. The schools we work with tell us the impact is evident from the start – with children being more settled, more focussed and excited for lunch. The kitchen teams also benefit – they become a valued part of the school community, helping with food education, growing produce and happier in their work. Kids are our future, let’s feed them like it!
