Minister Joins Students for School Lunch

Minister for Early Education Olivia Bailey MP swapped Westminster for Woodmansterne School dining hall on World Book Day, joining pupils for lunch and seeing first-hand how meals are made from scratch in a school kitchen.
The Minister for Early Education toured the school kitchen as chefs prepared lunch, before heading into the dining hall where pupils queued for a fragrant butter chicken curry and the ever popular salad bar. She spoke with kitchen staff about the realities of feeding hundreds of students each day, and sat with pupils to hear what they enjoy about school meals.
The visit offered a glimpse into the pace and organisation behind a typical school lunch service, as well as the role school kitchens can play in shaping children’s eating habits. Woodmansterne has worked with Chefs in Schools for several years to embed a whole-school approach to food.
Seeing School Food in Practice
The minister’s visit brought together organisations working to improve school food and food education, including Bite Back, School Food Matters and The Food Foundation.
Alongside school leaders and sector partners, the group discussed how schools can support healthier diets while managing tight budgets and the operational pressures faced by school kitchens.
Seeing lunch service in action gave policymakers a clearer picture of what delivering high-quality school food looks like in practice, from planning menus and preparing ingredients to serving large numbers of pupils in a short lunchtime window.

Why It Matters Now
The visit comes as the government reviews school food standards and prepares to expand free school meals to all children in households receiving Universal Credit.
For organisations working in the sector, the timing presents an important opportunity to ensure policy decisions are informed by the realities of school kitchens and the experiences of the pupils who rely on them every day.
“It was great to visit Woodmansterne School today with Chefs in Schools to taste their delicious school lunch and chat to children about their experience of school food.
I’m excited to be working on revising the school food standards – so that more children can enjoy eating great, healthy food.”
