The Challenge
Juice drinks, ultra-processed foods and unhealthy snacks dominated lunchtime sales. In the old canteen the kids came in and queued up in four lines. There were two snacks and sandwich lines and two hot food lines; there was lots of jostling. Some students were coming out with five juice cartons and that was their lunch.
Our Support
The school, which has always run its own in-house catering service, first partnered with us in 2021. We supported the school to recruit a new head chef. The school food offer has since been transformed.
The Result
Nowadays you’ll find freshly prepared hot meals and salads made with seasonal ingredients, thanks to head chef Dan Watts and his kitchen team. Other initiatives have also helped change the perception of the mealtime experience. Staff who eat with the students are now entitled to a free meal. Students and staff sit down together to eat lunch.

FUNDED BY
Thanks to funding from The Kusuma Trust, we’re able to offer our transformation model to Laurel Park at a subsidised rate.
Kusuma Trust have part-funded this work as part of their ongoing commitment to improving school food and food education. Want to know more, you can check out their website below.
