Guide to
brighten up
breakfast clubs

In response to the Government’s Breakfast Club pilot announcement, we worked with primary schools in London to trial a number of approaches and menus for breakfast.

We developed and tested our breakfast recipes on over 200 children. We spoke to teaching staff and kitchen teams to understand what works. They are the unsung heroes – turning up at 7am – just before the sun rises and they start working hard to welcome the children and help start the day in a happy, nutritious way.

For the biggest impact, we strongly recommend including the kitchen team when planning and delivering your breakfast club. Our guides offer practical tips for any school, no matter your kitchen set-up.

They set out three models:

  • Grab & Go: This can be delivered to classrooms or grabbed from a service area.
  • Table Top Kitchen: This requires a trestle-style table or service area, ideally with support from the kitchen team.
  • Bells & Whistles Breakfast: This model needs your kitchen team to be onsite cooking at breakfast club.

Who’s it for?

  • Every school looking to run a successful and nutritious breakfast club!

There’s more?

That’s right! We’ve also included some extras including:

  • A head of breakfast job specification template
