Chefs in Schools on Saturday Kitchen: Why School Food Matters

Our work transforming school kitchens got a national spotlight recently when, chef, food writer and trustee, Thomasina Miers, appeared on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen.

She told viewers we’re “going gangbusters” right now, and she’s right. We’ve reached over 300 schools across the country and 100,000 children through our programmes and the impact is significant. For some children, school meals are the only reliable nutritious food they’ll receive each day.

What we do: We train and support talented chefs to work in schools, helping them create delicious, nutritious meals that children actually want to eat. We work with schools on recipe development, kitchen design, procurement, and food education, creating a whole-school approach to food.

At schools like Totteridge Academy in North London, students aren’t just eating better food, they’re growing it on-site and learning about nutrition and sustainability. The school was recently shortlisted for the World’s Best School Prize for Supporting Healthy Lives in 2023.

Why it matters:  School food is a critical intervention point for child health and wellbeing. Those meals aren’t just about filling stomachs, they’re about giving every child the chance to thrive.

Get involved: Whether you’re a school looking to transform your food provision or someone who believes every child deserves great food, we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch now.
