Survey Reveals Positive Shift In School Food Culture

At Chefs in Schools, our end of year survey with school leaders and chefs has revealed that taking food seriously is paying off for the schools we’ve supported, across the country. From calmer classrooms to happier lunchtimes, the findings highlight a clear link between good food and a better learning environment.

Calmer Classrooms and Focused Pupils

Three-quarters of school leaders told us they’ve seen improved behaviour and concentration in lessons since making changes to their food offer. Children are calmer and more focused, helping teachers create better conditions for learning.

Dining Halls Feel Different

88% of school leaders report an improved dining atmosphere, describing lunchtime spaces that are more inclusive and less chaotic. For many schools, the dining hall has become a positive, social part of the day.

Chefs Driving Change in Schools

Over 90% of chefs say school food culture has improved since they began working with us. Training opportunities, food education initiatives, and a supportive community of peers are helping chefs create meaningful change.

The chefs themselves feel the difference too:

  • 86% say working with children is the best part of their job
  • 90% feel a sense of personal accomplishment through their work
  • 86% believe they have the training they need to succeed

While almost half of chefs face challenges such as limited resources and funding, morale remains strong. 57% say their job satisfaction has increased in the past year, and 43% rarely look for a new role.

Why This Matters

When schools invest in food and the people behind it, the benefits go beyond the lunch plate. Pupils learn better, staff feel supported, and school culture shifts for the better.

We’re here to help more schools make this change – with hands-on training, expert advice, and a growing network that believes food matters.
